If you’re lucky enough to be in the know, then Sofar Sounds New York is a good way to see free live music in the city. Started in the UK, Sofar Sounds was about bringing live music into small public spaces to give that secret living room effect. Now there are pop-up gigs all over the world.
I got to check out my first Sofar Sounds New York as I got the invite to head to a loft in the Canoe Studios in Chelsea. And apparently the secret is out as this place was rammed. Grabbing my place on the floor between the usual New York music crowd, I got to see 4 different artists/bands performing an all acoustic set. First up was Seasick Mama back for a second Sofar performance. Intense, and slightly bizarre. Next up was Anya Marina, who not only had a song on the Twilight Soundtrack (ooh ahh) she was hilarious, kept the banter going and was a good time. Then my favourite performed, Frances Cone. Raspy and soulful, this girl has an amazing voice. Last but not least were UK artists Duologue. Known as an electronic band, they closed with a stripped down version of their sound.
It’s tough to get an invite to the monthly sessions and I’ve only been that one time. Sign up on the website to receive emails about the gig and if you’re chosen, you won’t know who’s playing until you get there. Come on Sofar Sounds New York, pick me, pick me!
