Now if you’re a Mad Men fan, you’ll want to stop in for a drink at PJ Clarkes.
For 125 years, this New York institution has entertained a gaggle of tourists and celebrities looking for a taste of a real saloon. Its been said that Frank Sinatra always ended the night at PJ Clarkes and Buddy Holly apparently proposed to his future wife here on their first date.
What makes this place is the eccentricities like the ashes of their favourite customer behind the bar, Jessie the former bar mascot that was hit by a car now sits stuffed watching patrons, and the original “Wive’s window” that served women when they weren’t allowed into the bar until the 60s is still in place. The one thing that I won’t get to see is the legendary urinals… unless I can sneak into the men’s bathroom. Apparently the most famous in New York, these urinals are made of porcelain and stand six feet tall. Maybe justice will finally prevail and men will have to stand in line to use the bathroom…even if it is just to take a look at these classic urinals.
