If you’re a fan of 80s movies like I am, then you need to head to the Upper East Side to Blue Tree. Not only does this shop have cool items, but it happens to be owned by Phoebe Cates.
I have to say, I only headed to Blue Tree solely for the task of spotting Phoebe Cates /Klein (she married actor Kevin Klein). But what are the odds that a Movie Star would be hanging out in a store on a Saturday afternoon? And when I walked in, I was sadly disappointed. No Phoebe. But walking around the shop, it was actually quite cool. I love a good eclectic store that has quirky items, although a bit expensive. Phoebe Cates opened Blue Tree in 2005, and her dream was for it to be like a general store. Set on two levels, there’s funky jewellery, clothes, items for the home and some cool gifts. And when I came downstairs, surprise! Phoebe Cates was actually sitting behind the counter!
I tried to be cool, not stare too much, pretend to be interested in the necklaces while sneaking a peek at the woman who starred in Gremlins, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and my favourite 80s mini series….Lace. And I have to say, she looked fabulous. This woman does not age. I didn’t buy anything but as I walked out the door I yelled “Thank you” just to say I’d spoken to Phoebe Cates — and she yelled back “Bye”. So yes, I did indeed have a conversation, sort of, with a Hollywood Star.
I’ve been back once more, and Phoebe wasn’t there. So it’s hit or miss whether you see her or not. But I plan on trying again and buying a necklace just so I can say I’ve bought something from Phoebe Cates.
