It’s hard to miss Palazzo Chupi as its the only pink residential building built on top of an early 20th century factory in the West Village.
Artist Julian Schnabel designed and built this residential condominium in the style of a Northern Italian palazzo. Named after his second wife’s pet name “Chupi” (from the Spanish lollipop “Chupa Chups”), it contains five huge apartments, a studio for Schnabel, a massive exhibition space/art gallery, a 44 foot swimming pool and a rooftop patio. Construction began in 2005, with the colour of the building drawing a lot of controversy from the Village Preservation group which staged protests. Although Schnabel said the official colour was “Pompeii red”, others likened it to hot pink and even Pepto Bismol. Over the years, the colour has faded significantly to a much lighter pink, easing the tensions surrounding the building.
Whether you think its a New York landmark or more like Malibu Barbie’s house, you can currently buy the penthouse triplex for only a cool $13 million. Not bad if you have a bit of spare change….
