Nothing says the start of a New York summer like free Movies in the Park.
The annual outdoor movie screenings are a New York City tradition. See flicks from almost every genre from blockbusters like Top Gun aboard the Intrepid Museum a former working aircraft carrier, to indie films on the river at South Seaport to cult classics like The Shining in Central Park — complete with real bats flying around the screen. There’s usually some free popcorn involved but if you’re really lucky, there’s sometimes a free ice cream truck parked in front of Bryant Park.
Depending on where you go you can bring your own chair (Intrepid), or no chairs allowed (Bryant Park) or chairs are provided (South Seaport). But make sure you get there early as every man and his dog comes to these free screenings. Shows typically start at sundown, around 8:30pm, so grab a blanket, some snacks (you can usually smuggle in wine) and enjoy movies in the park, in the open air and under the stars.
