Momofuku’s Fried Chicken Dinner is apparently legendary. Said to the be best chicken in New York, it took me a year to get a taste of it.

Momofuku Noodle Bar in the East Village, is the vision of chef and owner David Chang who created a menu based on his Korean-American background. I’d been to the Noodle Bar once before for a bowl of ramen and wasn’t that impressed. But apparently the Fried Chicken Dinner was supposed to be the main draw. After nearly a year of trying to get a reservation on their website (they only post a few weeks in advance, you have to create an account, lay down a credit card, and they have very specific dining times of 5:30pm, 6:00pm, 10:00pm , 11:45pm and 11:55pm), I finally managed to get a reservation at a decent time! Bring on the Fried Chicken!

After waiting a week in anticipation of a mouth watering meal, I grabbed my 3 friends and headed for the best chicken in NYC — apparently. The meal is supposed to feed 4-8 people and includes two whole fried chickens, one Southern Style and one Korean Style, and it comes with mu shu pancakes, baby carrots, red ball radishes, bibb lettuce, four sauces and a herb basket. The Southern Style chicken is fried with a buttermilk and old bay batter while the Korean Style chicken is triple fried and served with a light spicy glaze. Heart attack on a plate?

The restaurant was crazy packed and after waiting a quick 15 minutes for our chicken, we were served a massive plate of fried chicken. You can make wraps with the pancakes or eat the chicken straight-up. But as the most of the chicken comes on the bone, I was a bit unsure how to make my pancake. Inelegantly, I had to peel the chicken off the bone and wrap it in my pancake. But I have to say it was damn good. I preferred the Korean Style as it was nice and spicy. But by the end, the four of us were defeated. I’d say the meal is too much for four people, but not enough for eight people. But if you’re lucky like me, you get to take home the doggy bag. And I have to say it was amazing the next day. Yes I was a huge oinker and ate four pieces of chicken the next day. And the Southern Style became my favourite. Eat your heart out KFC.

The Fried Chicken Dinner at Momofuku will set you back $125 for your entire party, but isn’t $20-$30 to taste the best Chicken in New York worth it?
