I walked by Mollys Cupcakes in the West Village and had to stop. Not only because of my hunt for the best cupcake in New York, but because it was the winner of Cupcake Wars season finale. Bring it on.
Ok there was one other reason why I stopped in my tracks. The sign in the window that said “Unattended children will be given an espresso and a free puppy”. Cupcakes and humour, how can you go wrong? Even better, when you step inside you’re greeted with swing-style seating at the front counter, board games and retro lunch boxes.
I swung (not literally) over to the counter to see what Molly’s Cupcakes had in store for me. Interesting flavours like Kahlua, Boston Cream, Cake Batter, Cookies and Cream and Mint Velvet called out to me. So I chose two and headed over to my swing.
Mollys Cupcakes is named after the owners third grade teacher — there must be a story to that. Good thing his teacher wasn’t named Mrs. Staradub like mine (although “Staradubs” would be a cool name for a pub or a pub/massage parlour as in Staradubs Rub and Pub….)
So how about those cupcakes? Well with each cupcake costing about $4 and the claim to fame that USA Today had voted them the Top 10 Best Cupcakes in the country….I was a little disappointed. I have to say the icing was amazing. Not too sweet and so light. But the cake was a bit dry. Ok maybe it was an off day for them, so in the name of research, I will go back and try them again…just for you.
