I’ve read so many reviews that say that Lombardis is the best New York Style pizza in New York. So I felt it was my duty to check it out.
So what exactly is New York Style pizza anyway? By definition it’s a traditional hand-tossed, wide, thin crusted pizza where the pieces are thin enough to fold like a snack. Apparently the flavour in the crust is unique to New York which some people think is attributed to the minerals in the water with Pizza makers from out of state transporting the water to their restaurants for authenticity. I’m not sure I quite believe this theory of magical pizza crust water, if anything, I really don’t want to know what’s in New York City’s drinking water. But back to Lomabardis…
In 1905, Lombardis became America’s first Pizzeria and still remains highly regarded as one of the best. So I was anxious to taste the legend that was Lombardis. We ordered a large (8 slices) pizza that came quite quick and looked amazing – like an authentic, home-made pizza ‘like mama used to make’. It tasted as good as it looked, but the best pizza I’ve ever had? Not so sure. Maybe they didn’t use enough of that New York water that day.
Tip: Huge line ups and a no reservation policy makes it tricky to get in. Best time to show up…3pm…half way between lunch and dinner.
