Walking around New York, you may start to notice that it’s been “Invaded” — by aliens from the 70s compliments of one of my favourite street artists Invader.

It all began in 1998 on a backstreet in Paris, when an unexpected sighting of mosaics featuring the image from the 1978 Space Invaders game started popping up unexpectedly. Fast forward more than a decade later and over 40 countries invaded, 2011 marked the 1000th invasion.

Invader NYCI’ve seen them in London, Paris and even Bern Switzerland, and was very excited to spot my first Invader in Brooklyn…even if it was one that was partially intact.

It’s become a game to Invader where he gives himself a certain amount of points (just like the game), based on how difficult the invasion is. In Montpellier, France the location of his mosaics were specifically chosen so that when placed on a map, they form an image of a giant space invader character. One of the more famous mosaics that have been installed is on the Hollywood sign. The first was placed on the letter D  in 1999. During further trips to LA, Invader has placed mosaics on the remaining letters.

I’ve only managed to spot two in New York and both were in Brooklyn. So if anyone knows of any others, give me a shout. Invader spotting has become one of my favourite hobbies.

Update: Found another on the side of a building off Delancey in the Lower East Side.
