Looking for magic, witchcraft, or to cast a spell? Head over to the Enchantments in the East Village, New York City’s oldest occult store.
I stumbled upon this store while walking in the Village. Now how can you not be enticed to take a peak inside a witchcraft store? Intrigued I walked in and was greeted by the expected black cat. Check. But what I wasn’t expecting was the altar at the front door. Creepy.
Roaming through the store, you’ll find tarot cards, books, talisman, an assortment of magical tools (statues, cauldrons, chalices, pentacles) and Wands made of different types of ethically harvested wood–just in case you’re feeling a bit Harry Potter.
One of their most popular products is their custom carved candles. You can just pick one up or have one carved on request. After a consultation of your intentions, the 7-day pillar candles can be made in front of you taking between 15 and 45 minutes to make. Carved with magical symbols, your name and astrological sign, they are anointed with the appropriate oils, and rubbed with metal glitter into the carvings to define them. They then place a small offering of honey, iron filings and incense into the jar.
Enchantments is also well known for its huge wall of herbs and oils from their Magickal Apothecary and carries a diverse range of products for different magical traditions and spiritual paths.. The Enchantments Formulary has hundreds of recipes that they can create from. Their staff is knowledgeable in many areas and they want to help people empower themselves, heal and grow through spiritual practice. They believe that everyone has it within them to create positive changes in their own life. But they believe in the principle “harm none,” and do not endorse items that hurt others. So if you’re looking to put a hex on your sworn enemy…they won’t help you. Maybe you better pull out the voodoo doll instead.
