Spotting rooftop houses in NYC has now become a favourite pastime. That is why I made a special diversion to check out the East Village Rooftop House.
Perched on a brick building on 3rd Avenue and 13th Street, the wooden house spans the entire apartment building and even has a patio. Not much is really known about this house and there are lots of rumours. It’s thought that the whole building was built by the founder of Kiehl’s and he built the house on top as a residence. It’s been said that the house on the top floor is actually the second floor of an entire apartment. The top floor of the brick portion of the building is the main part of the apartment while the roof house is actually an entertainment area, with the back being an indoor sauna. Word is that it was bought years ago for around $2 million. But then again, it’s also been said that its just the boiler rooms and roof access to the building’s three penthouses that lead directly up to the private tree-covered roof space.
Rumoured that a a Coen Brother (Fargo, No Country for Old Men, O Brother Where Art Thou) lives there, the East Village Rooftop House remains a mystery. So if anyone ever befriends a Coen brother or manages to get an invite up to the top, drop me a message.
