Walking through Central Park, there’s so much to see that you just might not notice that some of the Central Park Benches have plaques with personal messages professing undying love, marriage proposals and some just bizarre things.
The Adopt-A-Bench program in Central Park, was established in 1986 as a permanent way to fund and maintain the care of Central Park’s more than 9,000 benches and their surrounding landscapes. To date, more than 3,000 benches have been adopted and the Central Park Conservancy will install a personalized plaque on a park bench of the donor’s choosing. Most benches can be adopted for $7,500 but the custom-made rustic benches can be adopted for $25,000 and placed in a woodland or rustic area of the Park.
The Central Park Benches are looked as a unique way to memorialize or honour a loved one, for a birthday, anniversary, new baby, graduation….or just because. The plaques take about 8 weeks for production and installation and some areas of the park are no longer available. These popular areas include any space next to water, as well as spots near the Literary Walk, the Alice in Wonderland and Hans Christian Andersen statues, and Strawberry Fields.
So next time you sit down on a Central Park Bench, take a look behind you. They might have a story to tell.
