The Cat Cafe in New York is a temporary pop-up only for a a few days, that involves coffee and of course…cats.
Sponsored by Purina One and the North Shore Animal League, they want to start a dialogue about cat health but also find homes for the 16 rescue cats. After hearing about it on the news and wanting a bit of cat loving, I headed down for opening day. And apparently from the long line outside, I wasn’t the only feline fanatic. They only let 65 people in at a time and it took me a painful hour and a half to get in. I’m not some crazy cat lady, and if I knew how long it was going to really take, I’m not sure I would have done it. But after freezing my ass off, I finally made it in and was greeted with a free cake and a free “Cataccino”. Yes that’s a cappuccino with a cat face in the foam. Love it.
But the main event was the Cat Room, and it didn’t disappoint. Cats running around, cats sleeping, crazy ladies chasing after cats. And I have to say, I was completely surprised. I thought these little kitties would be a bit rough and stray looking but they were beautiful. We’re talking white, fluffy, well groomed and even more important….friendly. With so many people picking them up, petting them and basically man-handling them, most of them were lapping it up. I stayed for about an hour and when I was leaving, a few of the poor cats were being put in “time out” for being too stressed and naughty. That’s what you get for giving crazy cat ladies, hopped up on caffeine access to these furry friends.
