Wander down a hidden street in Chinatown to find Apotheke, an apothecary themed speakeasy inside a former opium den.
Modeled after old European apothecaries, the lounge is inspired by the artistic influence of absinthe dens in 19th century Paris. Enter through an unmarked door, and you’ll find a candle-lit space with light sconces filled with absinthe-like herbal liquid and bartenders in lab coats behind a marble bar.
With over 250 specialty cocktails, they’re prepared with local and organic produce from local greenmarkets or picked straight from their rooftop herb garden. You can choose from categories like Health and Beauty (containing cucumber, rose water, floral notes), Stress Relievers (lavender and sage), Pain Killers (cayenne, habanero), Stimulants (espresso, Red Bull), Aphrodisiacs (Champagne, cognac), and Pharmaceuticals (herbal elixers). A few interesting cocktails are:
EDAMAME AND SHISO: Vodka, Edamame Puree, Muddled Cucumber, Shiso Leaf, Shaved Ginger, Wasabi-Pink Himalayan Salt Rim
HARVEST OF MEXICO: Roasted Corn, Herba Sainte, Mezcal, Agave, Lime, Habenero Infused Bitters
FIELDS OF HEATHER: Heather Tips, Vodka, White Peach, Raspberries, Lavender, Limoncello, Lime
DEAL CLOSER: Cucumber, Vodka, Local Chinatown Aphrodisiacs, Mint, Lime, Vanilla Essenc
I’m not sure what the “Local Chinatown Aphrodisiacs” or “South American herbs and botanicals” are, but apparently one not to miss is the House Absinthe. It’s supposedly made using a secret 200 year old recipe that involves fermented sugarcane juice…..mmm.
